Statements of Support

  • Coping with Traumatic Events and Global Unrest: Support and Resources for UTD Community Members

As global violence persists over weeks and months, the UTD Student Counseling Center (SCC) acknowledges the profound suffering they bring. Despite the apparent desensitization of many distant observers, the SCC extends its support to our Arab, Black and Brown, Congolese, Haitian, Israeli, Jewish, Muslim, Palestinian, Russian, Sudanese, Tigrayan, and Ukrainian students, and all students affected by ongoing violence and human suffering. We acknowledge all UTD community members, and particularly those who identify with or have connections to communities experiencing mass violence, famine, and displacement, may experience a variety of understandable emotions during a time of such uncertainty and crisis, such as grief, fear, and anger. These emotions are a natural response. Our office remains available to support navigating these emotions if they become overwhelming or in problem-solving to plan ways to care for oneself.

The UTD SCC is eager to aid students with strategizing how to connect with community and find support in and beyond our offices as we recognize that therapy may not be the only method of support that students desire and would find beneficial. We urge all of you to engage in care and compassion for yourselves and one another. Additionally, we offer UTD and community resources to assist in efforts to support yourself and others.

We acknowledge the inherent limitations we face in crafting this statement, recognizing the complex dynamics within our sociopolitical climate. We understand that this statement may not fully satisfy everyone. Nevertheless, as mental health professionals, our sincere intention is to create an open and safe space by acknowledging genuine struggles, grief, and pain and to promote a sense of belonging and wellbeing. We aim to support emotional and psychological reactions to such violence as valid and natural.

We apologize for the delayed communication of this statement and stand witness to the profound impacts on our UTD community, particularly our students, advocates, and activists. We recognize the inadequacy of words in describing such devastation, acknowledging the concept of “soul loss” as a reflection of our irreferable collective reactions.
