What International Students have to say about adjusting:

“Everyone in America asks ‘how are you?’ but they don’t really mean it and you feel that if you started explaining, no one really wants you to explain it.”

“I was so excited to cone to America. I never expected to miss home and my family so much.”

“Language kind of defines the ways in which you can express yourself, emotionally as well as intellectually…sometimes you feel as if you can’t truly be yourself or be known for yourself.”

“Food is a big part of it, because I’m not used to eating burgers and pasta and French fries…When people here say they’re going to eat Chinese food, it’s not actually Chinese food, that’s American Chinese food.”

Center for Students in Recovery

Ever wondered about your alcohol or substance use?

  • How do I know if my alcohol or substance use is a problem?
  • How can I quit when I’ve tried to cut back or quit on my own in the past, but wasn’t successful?
  • How do I tell my friends I don’t want to drink or smoke?
  • Is my drinking considered normal or a problem here in America?
  • Where can I reach out for help and support if I want to stop drinking?
