Schedule Your Appointment

Initial Consultation

Your initial consultation appointment is a brief, 30-minute virtual session to discuss the needs that led you to reach out to the UT Dallas SCC. You will meet with a therapist who has reviewed your paperwork, and they will collaborate with you and connect you to the most appropriate services at either the SCC, UT Dallas or off-campus. This therapist will not necessarily be your therapist moving forward, but will be responsible for getting you established as a SCC client.

How to prepare for a virtual session

  • Create a Microsoft Teams account utilizing your UTD NetID and password.
  • Ensure you have a working computer/phone and Wi-Fi (if needed).
  • Find a private and quiet space where you feel comfortable talking. Don’t have a private space? Let us know, and we can set you up in our in-office virtual therapy suite.
  • Be available and ready to engage in session on your scheduled day/time.

What to Expect after Your Initial Consultation

The UTD SCC operates from a stepped care model. This means clients are prescribed services based on their presenting concerns, accessibility, consideration of identity variables and readiness for treatment. Multiple services within a step or tier may be recommended. These may include brief individual or relationship therapy (approximately six sessions per a school year, but may be adjusted as needed), workshops, group therapy, psychiatric services, other UTD resources or off-campus services.

Our Commitment to Students

UT Dallas SCC staff and clinicians value the mental health of our Comet community, and we believe there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to mental health. Thus, it is our goal to provide affirming and clinically recommended services for you as an individual. At the same time, we encourage clients to make it part of their mental health goal/goals to practice ownership and care with their wellness through steps such as:

  • Checking preferred email regularly for messages/correspondence with SCC staff.
  • Openly communicating needs/concerns with your provider.
  • Utilizing the skills, recommendations and resources you receive from the SCC in your daily life.

Having Academic Difficulties? Need a Letter?

The SCC does not provide letters of support for non-academic withdrawal for students unless they have been in ongoing treatment.

If you have questions about connecting with the SCC, please email us.

If you are in crisis, contact 972-UTD-TALK, call 911/988 or go to your nearest emergency room.
