Resources for Parents
Having a child begin their university career is a wonderful, but also stressful experience for parents. Often parents put their own feelings and reactions on hold while helping their student prepare for university life.
How is my child doing?
Keep in mind that with any change, there is always a period of adjustment. Remind your student that it is common to have a wide variety of feelings. Let them know that their existing strengths will help them get through this period of adjustment.
How can I tell if my child is in distress?
There is a normal period of adjustment to college that includes both excitement and stress. Sometimes this adjustment can be as long as six months to a year. However, if over time you notice that your student is not coping well (e.g. grades are declining, withdrawing from family and friends), you may consider suggesting that they seek assistance from the Student Counseling Center.
What to do if my child needs help?
The Counseling Center provides consultation to families who have questions or concerns about a student. We will provide as much assistance as possible. Due to confidentiality laws, however, we may be unable to provide information about your student if they are using our services.
