LGBTQIA+ Services
The UT Dallas Student Counseling Center (SCC) values, affirms, and celebrates all sexual, romantic, gender identities and expressions. All SCC staff members are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQIA+ students.
The SCC provides affirming individual, group, relationship, and psychiatric services for LGBTQIA+ students, consistent with our mission to cultivate a center and campus of belonging for all of our students. Check out the SCC Group Counseling page for information on LGBTQIA+ (and any other) mental health support and therapy groups.
Gender and Sexuality Clinical Consultation Team (GSCCT)
The Gender and Sexuality Clinical Consultation Team (GSCCT) is a group of clinicians within the SCC who have experience and training as well as passion for serving students in the LGBTQIA+ community. Our goal is to ensure students in the LGBTQIA+ community receive the highest quality care in a supportive, respectful, safe space.
All staff members of the SCC strive to be LGBTQIA+ affirming. Furthermore, the GSCCT therapists have extensive knowledge and training in the areas of gender affirming care and writing clinical documentation to support gender affirming care.
The GSCCT can provide specialized services for transgender and gender diverse students who are seeking gender affirming services and/or clinical documentation (e.g., letters supporting hormones or gender affirming medical procedures, documentation related to legal gender marker/name change).
Gender Affirming Care Services & Letters of Support
Utilizing a blend of the informed consent model and guidance informed by the standards of care as published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the GSCCT has created a process for students seeking clinical documentation to support gender affirming care. Examples of gender affirming care may include:
- HRT/GAHT (Hormone Replacement Therapy/Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy),
- Name and/or gender marker change in legal documents, and
- Gender affirming medical procedures and surgeries (e.g. “Top Surgery,” “Bottom Surgery,” including Mastectomy, Phalloplasty, Vaginoplasty, etc.).
To sign up for services at the Student Counseling Center, email counselingcenter@utdallas.edu. You may indicate in this email that you’d like to be paired with a therapist in the GSCCT, or more specifically that you are seeking clinical documentation to support your gender affirming care.
What To Expect
- Your GSCCT clinician will speak with you about your goals for the type of letter of support/documentation you are seeking, as well as provide you with detailed information about options for obtaining the letter of support.
- Your clinician will gather information related to personal history, such as gender identity and expression, family and social support, and mental health history.
- Per recommendations from the WPATH Standards of Care, your clinician will broadly review information related to social and medical aspects of transitioning, including a review of benefits and risks of gender affirming procedures.
- Your clinician is also committed to supporting you through this process, such as exploring insurance coverage, identifying affirming physicians in the community, and providing ongoing support throughout your transition process.
- Because everyone’s situation is different, we cannot guarantee a specific time frame, but have found that this process is generally completed within three to five sessions.
