Internship Program Admissions

Briefly describe in narrative form important information to assist potential applicants in assessing their likely fit with your program. This description must be consistent with the program’s policies on intern selection and practicum and academic preparation requirements:

The SCC serves as the primary mental health service provider for the UT Dallas campus, a rapidly growing institution of approximately 28,669 students. UT Dallas is a diverse community comprised of 31% Asian-American students, 28% White students, 15% Hispanic/Latinx students, 14% International students, 5% African-American students, and 4% Bi or Multi-racial students. The SCC provides brief individual and couple counseling, crisis intervention, outreach and liaisonships with other campus entities, and extensive group therapy and workshop options.   

Applicants for the SCC internship positions must be doctoral students currently enrolled in APA-accredited counseling or clinical psychology programs. At the time of application, applicants must have obtained 400 intervention hours, 200 of which are hours of direct service with adult populations, which includes intakes, individual, couple, and group therapy hours. Applicants must have successfully passed their comprehensive examinations and received approval for their dissertation proposal no later than the ranking deadline for the APPIC Match. Applicants must also have completed all appropriate coursework prior to beginning internship.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate interest and experience working in university counseling centers through practicum and employment experiences. The SCC is also seeking applicants who express an interest in exploring personal and professional integration and are interested in an internship that utilizes a relational, "use of self" model, focusing on self-reflection and awareness. Consistent with the values of the center and the training program, the SCC seeks applicants who demonstrate a commitment and value diversity, social justice and equity. Preference will also be given to applicants having prior experience with brief therapy and with group therapy. Lastly, preference will also be given to applicants who have received approval for their dissertation proposals by the application deadline.
